Do not murder

The third of the Seven Noahide Laws is clear and profound: Do not murder

It seems to be a universal agreement that murder is a problem. Sometimes things seem to be clear to us based on the story we read or hear. It is crucial to note that, given the vast amount of information we consume, it is the story that forms the basis of our opinions. With the pressure of time, we often make a large amount of assumptions based on our previous experiences and biases.

We know murder is wrong, and our experience is saying so, regardless of our humble beginnings. Or is it? What about all the pressure? What if there was abuse involved? What about wartime? What about self-defence? What about social justice or lack thereof? Can it excuse the murder?

Although all the questions are relevant and need to be answered, the bottom line is that murder is unacceptable. That is exactly why we need to know and understand the law, so we can actually talk about the difference between murder and killing. The amount of nuances is vast, and we need to exercise this law, knowing as much as possible, as well as gathering and assessing information from various sources.

The Bible teaches us that the Almighty has created humans in His image and likeness. This statement of creation makes us stop and think. What does it mean in His image? The answer to it is recorded in Exodus 33 – And He said, “You will not be able to see My face, for man shall not see Me and live”. Regardless of our acceptance of the answer, this is the reality.

Since we can see other people, it is part of liking that is applicable to us. Liking including abilities. One of the main abilities is to be co-creators of this world. Use of this gift needs to be exercised with caution, care, and in a very responsible way. Additionally, it is critical to remember that we can only create something from something, whereas the Almighty created our world from absolutely nothing.

If we want to achieve true peace, we need to learn how to create peaceful surroundings. Once we appreciate our own talents and ability to improve the world, we will see this very ability and potential in others. Armed with that clear message, we will realise the value of each and every life as well as we will be motivated to encourage others to reach their potential.

If we try to have this message in our minds and our hearts, we will work towards providing a supportive environment for peace. Attitude of gratitude and positive impact actions will become cornerstones of our everyday life. Murder isn’t a positive impact act.
